Tutankhamun

posted Wednesday, 23 April 2008

Our day out to London got off to a great start when the train pulled into Kings Cross a whole ten minutes early, a rare occurence!  Not that we would have minded too much if it had been a bit late as we had treated ourselves to first class tickets for the journey down.  It's a whole different world there!  Big, comfortable seats, a quiet carriage and very attentive service plus lots of freebies.  So we were in a very relaxed frame of mind when we left the station.  We took a quick trip to St Pancras to try and find the statues there which we hadn't been able to find before. One, called the Meeting Place is very big, 30 feet talle but not to our liking I'm afraid.  We much prefered the statue of Sir John Betjeman, who helped save the station from being pulled down some years ago and is one of my favourite poets.  After that we picked up some sandwiches and headed for Green Park for a picnic.  We had struck lucky with the weather and it was warm and sunny.

After the picnic we walked on down to the river to pass some time and to be near the right line on the Underground and then headed for the Dome.  It was our first visit there and we didn't realise just how big it was, however big it looks from outside inside it seems enormous.  We wandered round it for a few minutes and then it was time for the exhibition.  We'd heard some bad things about the crowds there but we were lucky enough to hit a time when we didn't have to queue and although there were a lot of people inside there weren't enough to stop us from seeing everything easily.  The exhibition was wonderful, there was lots to see it was well laid out and very well explained.  Highly recommened and well worth seeing.

After that it was time to head back into London which none of us was looking forward to as it was so crowded noisy and with horrendous traffic.  A little shopping and it was time to head back to the station.  This time alas not first class seats but the journey passed quickly enough.  We were glad to be back very tired but having thoroughly enjoyed it all!

Some more pictures of our day in London are here.

Sounds like you guys had a wonderful outing. I always wondered what it actually looked like inside the dome. They never show pictures of the inside. Great pictures, by the way.

We had a great time, Tine. It takes about three to three hours and fifteen minutes for us to get there depending on the train. Glad you like the pictures!
