The Eden Project

posted Monday, 18 May 2009

It was a long journey - two trains and twelve hours door to door - but it was worth it.  On Tuesday last week we took a short break in Cornwall to visit a place we had always wanted to see - The Eden Project.

The place we were staying in, Charlestown, was small and quiet.  There were lovely views out over the sea but not very much to do in the area.  In any case we'd planned a relaxing day on Wednesday and in the morning we visited the local Shipwreck and Heritage Centre and then treated ourselves to hot chocolate with a mound of whipped cream in a local bistro - very welcome on what was a chilly day with a stiff sea breeze.  That afternoon we indulged in a cream tea - wonderful scones and jam and thick clotted cream.  In spite of the weather we got a couple of nice walks in as well and checked out some local art galleries.

Thursday was the day we'd gone all that way for.  Our trip to the Eden Project.  We got an early start to beat the crowds and had a good wander round the outside gardens before heading into the first of the domes, the rainforest dome.  It was certainly very impressive.  It was hard to believe we were still in Cornwall as we wandered among the huge plants and trees, struggling a little in the heat and getting sprayed by the waterfall.

After a quick stop for lunch we headed to the mediterranean dome which was very nice and filled with amazing displays of colour but for us not as good as the rainforest dome.

We were fairly lucky with the weather - one short shower of rain and then the sun came out from time to time.  The whole thing was impressive from the moment we arrived and realised just how big it was and once inside there were so many things to see and enjoy.

A walk on the beach finished the day before we packed for home and another long day travelling.

A few more pictures of our holiday are here.
