Scotland

posted Monday, 28 July 2008

We set off for our weekend away on Friday morning and after a short train journey we arrived at Berwick to be met by my cousin who drove us straight back to her house.  A lazy day followed relaxing in the sun which shone all weekend, I'm happy to say, interspersed with a few short strolls around her garden, small wood and field.

Saturday was a more eventful day although not much more energetic as most of the sightseeing we did was from the car.  We set off late morning and headed for the village of Yetholm and after a break for a cup of tea outside a local hotel we made for the first real stop of the morning the nearby village of Kirk Yetholm to see the very pretty little church there. While we looked at  the church and had a little wander round the churchyard we found time to take in the wonderful scenery of the Cheviots which are on view all over that area.  After that it was on to Wooler for some lunch, stopping on the way as we came across a plaque by the edge of a field, commemorating the site of Ad Gefrin which none of us knew anything about and which these days is little more than a field with some sheep.  Lunch at a small hotel in Wooler followed which was very tasty, especially the chips and it was time to go back to my cousin's house again.  A not very energetic but interesting day.

Sunday was another lazy day with the bonus of lunch at a great restaurant nearby, lamb for me, risotto for Mum and scottish beef for my cousin and Dad.  The whole meal was terrific and so filling nobody had room for pudding which isn't like me at all!  Then it was time to get the train back home again after a very enjoyable and restful couple of days.

A few more pictures of our weekend are here.

Peter's has been to Scotland and he always says we should go. Maybe next year we could go there with the kids. Enjoyed looking at your pictures, Cal.
