Guy Fawkes

posted Saturday, 5 November 2005
The fireworks have almost died down now.  There are still some going off but nowhere near as many as there were earlier this evening.  The display which lasted almost the whole evening was fantastic, so much noise and colour and the air was full of the lovely smell they have.  We had  a great selection this year and we all thoroughly enjoyed it.  The only slight disappointment was that I wasn't able to take many pictures.  I was all set to use my camera which has a special setting for fireworks but the batteries had run down and of course I'd forgotten to charge the other set.  I got a couple but even so they weren't very good.  But we had a good night, watching ours and others fireworks, using our sparklers then settling down with a jacket potato and chocolate brownies followed by a nice glass of whisky.

Hi Cal, I love your blog! I stopped by as I notice you too were blogging about Bonfire night! I live in a place called Caerphilly, The castle here has a fantastic display every year. I love the smell of fireworks too....Though, not as much as the smell of jacket potatoes ;-)

Oh how sad that your batteries had died. I'm sure the photos would have been great!

Ok, What is Guy fawlkes day? It has been raining hard here for three days, and the wind just stopped today! It has been really nasty and dark out, and I LOVE IT!

Thanks, Karen, and the jacket potato was delicious!

Thanks, Kathryn, glad you like the blog. The fireworks might be over for the year but at least there are still jacket potatos to be had ;)

I was really looking forward to trying out the camera properly, Brenda :( That will teach me to keep the batteries charged!

Guy Fawkes goes back to 1605, Mary Lou, when Catholics were persecuted in this country and a group set about blowing up the Houses of Parliament to kill James I and set up his daughter as a puppet queen. The plot was betrayed and when a search of the cellars of the Houses of Parliament was made Guy Fawkes one of the group was caught about to set off the gunpowder. The whole fireworks thing started as a celebration of the fact that they were stopped and a traditional part is to make a guy and burn it on a bonfire. Hope your weather stays better for you. We have actually had some sunshine here the last day or two!
